Congratulations, Tom!

As of May 31, 2023, Brown Edwards' partner, Tom Puryear, will be officially retired! Tom joined Brown Edwards as a partner in November of 2021 as part of the acquisition of Mitchell Wiggins. He has 39 years of experience in accounting, and taxation and has held leadership positions in assurance in the firm as well as with the Virginia Society of CPAs.

His career with Mitchell Wiggins began in 1984 and Tom believes he could not have asked for a better place to work. It was a perfect fit for him. He was taught at a young age “that clients don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.” Our clients knew how much we cared, and they could trust and rely on us. Our partners and staff were dedicated to our clients and to each other. Most of all, we enjoyed being part of the team.

According to Tom, he is very excited about the future of the firm and feels that by joining forces with Brown Edwards the firm has a wider base of strong professionals, additional bench strength, and deeper expertise.

The strength of the combined teams will provide clients with the resources of a Top 100 firm with a commitment to maintaining the care that our clients have always enjoyed. This structure will also offer his younger colleagues a promising future that will match or exceed the great opportunities he had in public accounting.

Tom’s plans for retirement are to focus on health, friends, and family.  He was blessed to have two sons both born in tax season and his youngest son was actually born on April 15th so he hopes to spend much time celebrating birthdays in much grander ways. One of his partners always told him that he couldn’t golf and he should consider taking up bowling. Contrary to the advice of his dear departed partner, he is going to take the time to learn the game of golf. He plans to do some traveling and just daily enjoy this next chapter of life in whatever form it may come forward.

Please join us in congratulating Tom on this wonderful milestone!
