Written by Brown Edwards | Jun 9, 2022 12:00:00 PM

Debbie joined the BE team in August 2021 and serves as the firm’s chief financial officer (CFO) out of the Harrisonburg, VA office.

She earned her Bachelor’s degree from James Madison University and is a licensed CPA in Virginia. She is a member of the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants (VSCPA) and the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA). She is in her eleventh year of serving as president of the local IMA chapter, which offers continuing education classes and provides scholarships for accounting students at area colleges.

We interviewed Debbie to really get to know her, outside of her profession, and we were surprised to learn that she was a state champion in track, both the 1600 and 3200 meters, and cross-country in high school.

Where are you from and where did you grow up?

I grew up on a cattle farm in Augusta Country and currently live about 10 minutes from there in Staunton, VA.

What are some of your hobbies?

My husband and I walk several miles most days, and we enjoy hiking Skyline Drive and Blue Ridge Parkway trails when we get a chance. I like to cook and try new recipes and love playing games with my family.

What do you consider your best quality or trait?

I try to lead by example and with integrity. Also, I've always been really organized which is helpful in this career with all of the various projects and deadlines.

What is the best advice you ever received and from who?

"Do to others as you would have them do to you." Luke 6:31 - This directive from Jesus is something I try to apply in both my personal and professional life.

If you could be a superhero what would be your superpower?

I think it would be cool to be able to fly like Superman so I could get to places quickly and not have to deal with traffic!

What is your favorite food?

It's hard to pick a favorite, but I'd have to say pizza and my mom's homemade chocolate chip cookies.

What famous figure (living or dead) would you most like to meet and why?

Ever since visiting Monticello in elementary school, I've been fascinated by Thomas Jefferson. He was such an intelligent man with so many different skills and interests. I think it would be interesting to meet him and get his thoughts on what's going on in this country and the world today!

What do you think is your biggest contribution to the Brown Edwards team?

I am able to draw on my 25 years of experience serving as controller for a local company and apply the leadership and business skills I learned there in my role at Brown Edwards.
